Devotion - Friday April 24 - Fighting Worry and Uncertainty Part 3

Text: He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For everything was created by him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and by him all things hold together. - Colossians 1:15-17 (CSB)

Devotional: This week we have been looking at worry that comes from uncertainty around us during the COVID-19 quarantine. In part 1, we looked at Matthew 6 and saw that we have a loving father who even provides for the birds and the flowers. In part 2, we looked at the importance of setting our minds on things above and looking at events and circumstances through an eternal perspective. Today, we will focus on Colossians 1.

Colossians 1 tell us that from the smallest of atoms to the millions of stars in our galaxy, God is the maker and director of everything. He is sovereign and in control of all things…yes ALL things. He is in control of governments, people, and circumstances.  He knows how many hairs you have on your head (Luke 12:7) and his thoughts are more than the grains of sand on the beach (Psalm 139:17-18). He holds all things together. Without Jesus, everything would crash and crumble.

I propose to you that faith is the antidote to worry. Not just any faith, but faith in the one who created all things through him and for him. Faith in the one who is before all things. Faith in the one who holds all things together. Faith in the same Trinitarian God who is sovereign over the universe, one God in three persons, the Father (Matthew 6), the Son (Colossians 1), and the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:23).

Questions:
  1. Is faith really the antidote to worry? How so?
  2. How does knowing God is sovereign and in control of all things help with worry?
  3. How does knowing Jesus holds all things together help with worry?
  4. When you start to worry, what will you combat it with?
