Family Devotions

North Church Family,

Now that Covid-19 has forced us to slow down and now we have much more time with our families, we want to encourage you to create a routine with your kids that includes a family devotion time.  This may cause you some stress and anxiety but take a deep breath and keep it simple.  We will give you many different resources and suggestions, but you need to figure out what works best for your family.  Have fun with the process.  Try new things.  Keep things simple and short.  You got this!!!

We see clearly in Deuteronomy 6 that we are responsible for the spiritual growth of our children.

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. - Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Teaching and communicating the truths of the gospel to our children throughout our day is the goal.  Usually, we don’t have this opportunity as they are in school and we are at work, but in this season we do.  The family devotion time is a great way to spend some intentional time having spiritual discussions with your family.

We encourage you to find a set time each day for the family devotion.  This will help you with accountability and give your kids a routine that they can anticipate.  Within our family, we have had the most success when we schedule them first thing in the morning or right after dinner.
So what should you do?  Keep it simple and be flexible!!  Here are some elements that you can include.  Don’t include all of them each time.

  • Prayer (pray for your family or have the kids take turns praying)
  • Worship (find a song or two that you can sing together ex. YouTube, Apple music)
  • Read a passage of scripture (just start with Matthew and read a section out loud)
  • Watch video content (BibleProject, RightNow Media)
  • Ask questions (What did you see/hear? What did you learn about God/Jesus? How does this affect us?)Take it slow and be intentional.

Treasuring the gospel with your family,

Pastor Jay and Jess Kennedy
